Terramesh Gabions : A Robust Solution for Challenging Civil Engineering Projects

Terramesh Gabions are a vital component in various construction projects located in areas with complex terrain and strong currents. They effectively combat subsidence, erosion, landslides, and other geotechnical hazards. To enhance their resistance against these challenges, engineers often deploy gabion mattresses with anchors as a highly effective solution.

What is a Terramesh Gabion?

1. Definition:

Terramesh Gabion is known as gabion with anchor tail, produced and developed by Maccaferri Company in the 1970s.

A terramesh gabion is a type of gabion that resembles a conventional gabion but with an additional steel mesh panel firmly attached to it. This design provides the gabion with additional anchor points and a larger surface area for contact with the ground, significantly increasing the load-bearing capacity of the gabion structure. Engineers often incorporate a layer of geotextile fabric beneath the anchor to facilitate water drainage and prevent soil or sand erosion at the base of the structure.

2. Design Standards:

  • The wire used to manufacture terramesh gabions is hot-dip galvanized steel wire woven into continuous panels or PVC-coated hot-dip galvanized steel wire that meets BS443 standards to ensure long-term durability in soil environments.
  • Electro-galvanized wire is not used in the production of terramesh gabions.
  • Terramesh gabions are manufactured in rectangular shapes with an anchor tail. The rectangular box consists of:
    • A continuously woven body panel
    • Two end panels connected to the body panel with wire ties
    • A side panel with a length equal to the anchor width or the length of the gabion mattress, connected to the gabion mattress with wire ties
    • The size of the gabion mattress with anchors is selected based on the project’s scale, shape, terrain, and construction conditions.
  • Terramesh gabions are woven with mesh sizes of (60×85)mm, (80×100)mm, and (100×120)mm. The mesh size tolerance is ± 10%. The meshes are double twisted hexagonal with three twists, ensuring that damage to one mesh does not affect others.

Functions and Applications of Terramesh Gabions

1. Functions:

The functions of a terramesh gabions are not significantly different from those of a regular gabion. Therefore, terramesh gabions offer the following functionalities:

  • Protection
  • Load bearing
  • Erosion control
  • Drainage

2. Applications:

  • Soil reinforcement and retaining walls:

The use of terramesh gabions and riprap stones provides a highly flexible reinforcement structure that can adapt to ground movement and is suitable for retaining walls in river and coastal areas.

  • Riverbank protection:

Terramesh gabions are primarily used to combat riverbank erosion and protect them from scouring. As river water continuously abrades riverbanks, the sloping sides of the river gradually weaken and can collapse at any time. The use of terramesh gabions can significantly enhance riverbank reinforcement.
